Be a Bookworm!

We have been implementing a new approach to learning our spelling patterns this week.  We use the Words Their Way program and have been using the sorting routines of sorting all year.  This has worked well but I have noticed the attention of some of my kiddos is not lasting in during small group instruction.  Since this is the most important time for them to learn their spelling patterns, I came up with a new approach, Be a Bookworm!  I created 54 mini-pages that cover our spelling patterns for the within-word pattern spellers.  On Monday, we complete the first page as a group during small group, I use it to guide instruction and they are held accountable for learning during our group.  Then, on Thursdays they complete the second page independently to see where their level of mastery is before taking their test on Friday.  We tried it out a little early this week, and here's a few pictures of it in action!

We use chips to count phonemes, which is one of the tasks on the mini-page that correlates with one of our spelling patterns this week. This seems like such a simple task, but it has proven to be very difficult for my 2nd graders. 

Here's an example of a completed "Monday" page, the mini-pages tasks change with different spelling patterns but the sorting chart and highlighting stays the same with all patterns. We record words onto the sorting chart while we're sorting our word cards, so we can talk about the pattern, sort it and then write it.

These fun, decoding bookmarks are also included in the pack to help my kiddos remember to use their spelling pattern skills!  Using these mini-pages this week during our instruction kept my kiddos engaged and accountable which was a big improvement from last week!  If you're interested in checking out the pack further, you can click on either image below.
